- A year after the Canon EOS R debuted, we finally have the first of two "trinity lenses" for the system: the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L USM and Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM.
They both come with hefty price tags, but do they have hefty performance to match? I put them through their paces for stills and video… is the Canon EOS R a fully rounded pro system at last?

Re: Focus breathing - Zooming in and out with no shift in focus is NOT focus breathing. This is a vari vs par focusing issue. Focus breathing is when you change focus, the image size will change at the SAME focal length. You declare it good without testing it. They are BOTH extremely important in film making, as creative decisions are made based on them.
Well done. One of the first videos on youtube and definitely helpfull.
Thanks Ralf, very glad it was useful!
yay - for horrendous british autumn weather !!!
Nice round up. With its incredible lenses the RF system could be the future of video. Canon have just patented their RF cinema camera and Red are launching their RF Komodo soon :)
Oh yeah, the RF mount is super exciting. I'm pumped to see what Red does with the Komodo!
Artaius me too. I went back and googled the RF cinema patent etc to check myself and realised I’d heard about it from one of your articles! I really like your writing. I’m a PhD researcher, writing and interviewing around the topic of convergence - influencer strategies and prosumer gear integrating with ‘pro’ film production practices. Would love to hear your thoughts some time on current trends and the future in this area, if you’re interested to share your insights. Looking forward to seeing more vids on your channel.
Fantastic review. !!
Thank you so much, Justin!
A question, if you don't really like zooms and don't generally use them... why review them? I shoot primes as well (currently on Fuji) but must admit to missing the flexibility of zooms especially when you find yourself in situations where you can't "focus with your feet" or high wind and dusty conditions when changing lenses is not advised. These lenses can supposedly resolve up to 100mp, so Canon was always looking ahead. The R5 and R6 is proof of that.
Finally! A video on these lenses. Thank you!
No probs, thanks for watching!
Hahah! "a bit of a kick in the ball..." I totally agree with that point!
Well articulated review. Sub’d.
Thanks for getting a video out so quick! Reckon you could show how capable the IS is on the 24-70 for video? Thanks man!
Great review. Like many, I am close to pulling the trigger on the RF lenses, but a bit underwhelmed on the bodies. Thank you for the info.
Thanks for this video! Just subbed. Super funny "kick in the balls" comment!
helpful review, thanks !
Excellent insight and review and explanations. I recently purchased the EOSR + 24-105 (f4). I'm trying to simplify my kit a little bit, and having a hard time deciding which direction to go. Do you find that the 24-70 (2.8) would be a good option to replace the 24-105 (which has a longer range, though not able to go as wide open)? I'm a hybrid shooter, and have done everything from street to events, and some landscape. Or should I possibly stick with the 24-105 and then get something else to fill in the gaps on either side? Thanks for your help.
Could you do coma and astigmatism test on both lens?
hope the upcoming f4 trinity is as sharp as the f2.8 trinity.
Do you think canon will make a EOS R MK II ?
i will prolly skip 24-70 instead i will get 50 1.2 i shoot portrait and food mostly
I haven't reviewed the 50 f/1.2L, but I've used it extensively and it's a great lens - just very big and very pricey!
@@Artaius i will eventually get 2470, but i need a lens with more character sincei m also getting 15-35 i will physically move with my feet when i m using 50mm thats my plan for now, hopefully it works for my type of shooting
Styxhexen got a nice camera.
The RF 24-70 vs RF 28-70 which would you choose? Focusing on portraits and video
Just for portrait 28-70, if videos is what you have in mind or part of your needs then without a doubt 24-70.
The IS in 24-70 is so handy and the 24-70 have incredible min focus distance and at 70mm u can do macro almost 1:1
Fantastic and really useful video. Subscribed!
is there any point getting an eos r if you can't afford the RF lenses ?
Technically speaking, you can't sell... a couple of (your) kidneys! :P Great review, thanks!
Guess I need to call in a few favours/kidneys from relatives! ;-) Thanks for watching!
Hmm, when I got my a7III I was convinced by a well known photographer that Canon would never go mirrorless on full frame. And now I just got the 24 mm GM f1.4, and I love is so much. Will see how the 70-200 with its brilliant form factor turns out?
Stick with your sony they have great lenses and have every lens you'll need now
I think for the longest time even Canon was convinced that it would never go mirrorless - that it was just a fad that would disappear. Ditto Nikon… until it became clear that it wasn't a fad, it was the future. Still, it enabled Sony to get a real head start to develop a brilliant imaging system of its own. I'm hoping for big things from the 70-200mm, and that form factor certainly is intriguing!
@@Artaius Yeah, I think the bokeh of the coming 70-200 from Canon will be really pleasant. Tamron maybe gets the same sharpness, but their bokeh is a bit stressfull. I can't make bokeh paintings with my Tamron as with my GM 24 mm, but the R-glas probably reaches the same level. And Sony's 70-200 mm f2.8 you can't carry around, you need a car for that lens.
The 15 35 is £1600 in quite a few site's.
